From Talad Noi to the World: Joakim Lloyd Raboff’s Creative Vision
Introduction and Background
Joakim Lloyd Raboff is a Swedish-American visual artist with an impressive portfolio spanning film, photography, and writing. Throughout his career, Joakim has been a master storyteller, seamlessly blending these mediums to create narratives that resonate deeply with his audience. He often reflects on how each discipline enriches the other—a perspective we find both inspiring and relatable.
For over 40 years, Joakim has traveled the world, capturing stories and immersing himself in the richness of life. From bustling urban landscapes to quiet, hidden corners, his work reflects a deep curiosity and appreciation for the human experience.
We first met Joakim last year, and his story left a lasting impression on us.
A Lifelong Love for Thailand
For Joakim, Thailand is more than just a destination—it’s a place that feels like home. Since the early 1980s, he has made it a point to visit almost every year, drawn to the country’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. Among his favorite areas are Charoenkrung, Talad Noi, and Silom, each rich in history and character. Notably, Talad Noi in Charoenkrung is where Fotoclub BKK—our very own shop—is located, making his connection to the area even more special.
Talad Noi’s Heavy Metal
Joakim’s fascination with Talad Noi led him to publish Talad Noi’s Heavy Metal, a photobook capturing the essence of this vibrant neighborhood—coincidentally, the very location of our shop. Hearing Joakim describe his love for the area in his own words is truly remarkable. Despite having visited some of the world’s most renowned destinations, he confidently asserts that Talad Noi holds a unique and cherished place among his favorite spots on the globe.
An Unforgettable Encounter
We first met Joakim when he discovered our Film Lab/Club during his final three days in Bangkok. Despite his limited time, he visited us every single day, even stopping by on the morning of his departure before catching an afternoon flight. His enthusiasm and warmth transformed a casual visit into the beginning of a meaningful friendship.
Before he left, we made a promise: the next time Joakim visited Bangkok, we would collaborate on something special.
And now, that moment has arrived.
The Talk
Our event, as always, brought together an incredible group of individuals, each with their own unique story and perspective. Though small, this gathering was packed with quality and passion. We were thrilled to welcome friends from England, Germany, Italy, France, the US, and, of course, Thailand. Even more special, many attendees brought their own photobooks to share, adding a personal and interactive element to the event.
Joakim captivated us with his passion for photography and shared valuable insights into creating and funding photobook projects. Among his most compelling words was this reflection:
“We all have short lives. I hope that when we are no longer here, the book will represent me. It might sit in a bookshop somewhere, and maybe someone will find it and become interested in my work.”
His dedication to preserving moments and stories through photobooks struck a deep chord with everyone present.
During the session, Johnathan also shared his impressive journey of creating eight photobooks over the years. For him, photobooks have always been his favorite way to preserve memories. He opened one book to show us two images—capturing the exact moment his son took his first steps. The joy in his eyes as he recounted the memory was palpable. Someone in the audience commented, “We don’t need hundreds of images to remember a moment—just two is enough.” Johnathan’s latest photobook, Expressions, cost over 4,000 baht (3,500 for the book and 700 for incoming taxes), reflecting the effort and dedication he puts into his craft.
Brandon added to the mix with Bangkokish, a small yet impactful zine. To us, this book represents his love for film photography and the vibrant streets of Bangkok. It’s another example of Brandon’s exceptional storytelling—well done as always!
The talk was a heartfelt celebration of creativity, storytelling, and the power of photobooks to preserve memories and emotions. From Joakim’s reflections on legacy and passion to Johnathan’s moving moments and Brandon’s vibrant take on Bangkok’s streets, every attendee left with inspiration and a renewed appreciation for the art of photobooks. This gathering was more than just a meeting of minds; it was a reminder of how photography connects us across cultures and generations.
